ZZ Slewing Drives Deployed in Domestic Hydrogen-Powered Heavy-Duty Cranes

Guided by the national "Dual Carbon" strategy, hydrogen energy—serving as a vital medium for clean energy—is rapidly gaining traction within the transportation and heavy industry sectors. Recently, China's first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty port crane successfully completed its trial run at a coastal port, marking a pivotal step forward in the nation's development of green ports. As a key supplier of transmission components, ZZ Bearings provided a specialized slewing drive tailored to the crane's hydrogen-based power system, thereby contributing to this historic milestone.

Unlike traditional diesel or electric cranes, hydrogen-powered cranes feature a power system characterized by unique vibration frequencies and response characteristics. During operation, hydrogen fuel cell stacks generate micro-vibrations at specific frequencies; if the natural frequency of the slewing drive system coincides with these vibrations, it can easily trigger resonance, potentially compromising the equipment's service life. To address this challenge, ZZ Bearings engaged in close collaboration with the crane manufacturer during the design phase. They conducted a modal analysis of the slewing drive, meticulously adjusting its structural stiffness and mass distribution to effectively avoid the resonance zone.

Furthermore, taking into account the unique nature of hydrogen-rich environments, the product incorporates explosion-proof designs and anti-static treatments to ensure absolute safety. At the trial site, this massive red crane—powered by hydrogen energy—smoothly hoisted containers; its slewing movements were fluid and seamless, exhibiting absolutely no abnormal vibrations. Industry experts noted that the successful application of the ZZ slewing drive has resolved a major technical hurdle regarding transmission system matching in heavy-duty new energy equipment, thereby clearing the path for the large-scale adoption of hydrogen technology within the port machinery sector. Moving forward, ZZ will continue to align closely with national energy strategies, developing innovative products tailored to meet the evolving demands of new energy applications.
