ZZ Worm Gear Slewing Drive: Load-Holding Capacity Increased by 30%

For equipment such as aerial work platforms, cranes, and fire-fighting aerial ladders, the self-locking performance of the slewing system is directly linked to the safety of the operating personnel. Under hovering conditions, if the slewing drive experiences even minute slippage—often referred to as "boom drift"—due to hydraulic fluctuations or gear tooth wear, the consequences can be catastrophic. Addressing this critical industry pain point, the ZZ Bearings R&D team conducted an in-depth analysis of the tribological characteristics of worm gear transmissions. Following six months of intensive research and development, they successfully launched a new generation of slewing drives featuring superior self-locking performance.

The core of this technological breakthrough lies in innovations in gear tooth profile design and upgrades to material heat treatment processes. We have moved away from the traditional Archimedean worm profile, opting instead for a novel double-arc tooth profile optimized through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This design significantly increases the meshing contact area, thereby enhancing the reliability of frictional self-locking. Concurrently, the worm wheel gear ring undergoes a specialized nitriding treatment process; this substantially boosts surface hardness while preserving the toughness of the core material, effectively preventing plastic deformation of the gear teeth under heavy-load impact.

To validate the performance of this new product, ZZ Bearings submitted a prototype to the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Cranes and Lifting Machinery for authoritative testing. Under extreme operating conditions—specifically, at a full load equivalent to 1.25 times the rated capacity—the new drive maintained a continuous hover for 48 hours after the power source was cut off, exhibiting virtually zero angular displacement. In contrast, the displacement of traditional products typically hovers at the very edge of the permissible tolerance range. The official test report explicitly states that the load-holding torque of the new drive has increased by 30%, resulting in a significantly higher safety factor. Currently, this product has been successfully deployed in the latest electric boom lifts manufactured by a leading domestic aerial work platform enterprise, providing users with a safer and more reliable experience for high-altitude operations.
